I don't use Frontpage. I hand code. Always have. I have worked for companies in the 1990's that made us use Frontpage. I've always disliked it.

Nobody thinks my sites are pretty. However, they convert well and do well in search engines.

Nearly all of my clients are repeat customers and my work has a high referral rate. I do not build sites for people.

Rand,

didn't know you were a usability guy. Although I might have known, I really like your clean design over at SEOmoz.

I admit that Kim's got the "cobbler's children have no shoes" issue, but her work is top notch - nothing short of fantastic.

Before I was in SEO, I was a usability consultant to some local Washington state businesses for their websites. I always felt that I did a good job and was well paid and thought of. Kim makes me realize that I never touched the tip of the iceberg. Her reports will make you a believer as soon as you order one.

And - she's working on the usability of her sites - she's just a bit swamped with business.

Great interview Andy - thanks!

I actually did go to her site over as month ago, and completed the task of learning more about usability, and then completed the task of learning about how her consulting services work, and then completed the task of ordering those services. I didn't feel confused or frustrated at any point.

On the other hand -- what is 'easy and intuitive' to me in terms of usability may not be so for you.

andy, act as a consumer of her services and go try and complete any task on her site and I think you'll see what I mean. most out of the box web sites are easier to use and understand than any one of hers.

ugh, I just went back to make sure things haven't changed, and they haven't. I can't imagine *any* user hitting those sites and even having a clue what tasks they can perform let alone actually completing one.

What does Geocities have to do with usability?

If I remember correctly she did admit somewhere to using Frontpage to code her sites. But I'm not sure what that has to do with users achieveing their goals on her sites.

Usability isn't about "seeming" usable. It's about a user being able to perform the task they want to perform. Given that definition, I'm not sure you've made a point.

If Kim could make one site that seemed even remotely usable, I might pay attention to her. Has *anyone* that listens to her looked at any of her sites? Holy crap, they might as well be hosted on geocities.
